There was a certain important thing about Kyoshi Island that drew Aang back to the place every year (and any other time that he could get a chance to visit. It was the same as the Hog Monkeys that he frequently enjoyed ridding in the forests of the Earth Kingdom. In the often cold bay of the island where Elephant Koi. Giant fish that cut through the water with grace and beauty. They would sometimes leap into the air as well, as if pure enjoyment of swimming and jumping. It was a beautiful scene to watch. Even more fun to participate.
That was the reason for Aang's appearance on Kyoshi island. He had landed further inland to get some food for both himself and Appa. A Flying Bison needed a lot of hay and while travelling, it wasn't so easy to come across food. This far south, Aang was becoming tempted to return home. Life was so much easier there and he hoped that they would no longer want to split him from Gyatso. He missed the old Monk who had basically been a father to him. It was worth visiting home simply to see him.
But for now, cheer was the main thing. Which was why Aang and Appa were heading towards the beach. Aang intended to ride the Elephant Koi once more and he was anticipating the entire thing. It was so relaxing to speed through the waves and into the air once more before plummeting back down into the coolness of the water. It was an exhilarating experience. One he didn't get from flying on Appa and not nearly to the same degree with gliding. Gliding was common compared to the Elephant Koi riding (or the Hog Monkeys, which had an extra element of danger).
Arriving on the beach, Aang took in the beautiful, pristine, blue waters, his grey eyes searching for any sign of the Elephant Koi being near by. You had to spot them before riding them otherwise there was a lot of searching. His staff was safely packed away with the rest of his stuff on the back of Appa who had decided to sit down on the sand. After all, this was not a sport that Appa could participate in, but he had seen Aang do it many times in their time together.
