It's the year(or Turn, to be correct) 555 after Landing. And so the people of Pern has the end of the Pass eagerly in sight. Eagerly looking forwards to just a couple years and some months, until anyone living now won't be seeing Thread ever again. Those who live that long, which the vast majority are definitely hoping to do. And which the rest better do to, well, unless age takes some of them. That just can't be avoided.
In all, life is pretty much normal for it being during a Pass.
Then it all goes rather strange in late summer. As a metal thing crashes down through Pern's atmosphere, seeming to break up into many pieces. Of which the biggest one crashes down somewhere between Benden Hold and Benden Weyr. Upon investigating, riders from the Weyr and a number of volunteers from a road work crew. They find the object. And inside it, two creatures, one that might look distantly human, and another that is certainly not.
Appearing heavily injured and unconscious, but alive, the creatures are brought to Benden Weyr.
Soon resports start coming in from many parts of Pern too, of other creatures being found or encountered. Though these are awake and well, and one may have managed to communicate that it's due to a sort of 'lifeboats'. That were a part of the strange 'ship' they traveled in. Coming in a great variety of appearances, it's not known exactly how many they are though. Or if they may be friendly, or not...
At the same time, sailors from Ista are saying that they saw a number of strange 'falling stars', when far out at sea to the south. What those are though, if anything at all, that's impossible to know at this time though. Those sailors might just have been making up a story after all, especially with all the rumors spreading around now.
Pern, and its visitors, might all be in for some interesting times ahead.

While this version of Pern has just had a (space)ship full of various, to them strange beings, dropped on it. There's also plenty of opportunity to just play along the edges of that plot too. Your character hearing about things, but maybe not having a front row seat themselves.
Write yourself a character who's a dragonrider, or one of many living in a Weyr, or a Holder, or a Crafter, or Trader, or Holdless maybe? We've four main locations open for your character to be living in.
Otherwise, if not the above. You can create a character who's one of many who were onboard that crashing spaceship. Finding themselves stranded on Pern once they stepped off the 'lifeboats'. Some at least by appearance looks remotely like humans, and others who definitely aren't. And they're stuck at a planet that may be pretty primitive compared to what they're used to.
When it comes to technology at least. You have to consider the language problems too. And maybe worse; those things regularly raining from the sky. Yes, even if they've a flying species engineered to fight it...
All sorts of people might have been on the spaceship now downed. From tourists, to those business traveling. Or even lower level criminals; some might have been deported, others on their way to report in for some jail time. One or two of the ship's pilots may also be up for adoption as characters.
More strange things, a different sort of extra-Pern visitors. They may be making their appearance soon too, once they're done with crashing and hatching at least. Curiosity and instinct pushing them into traveling to see the sights that's to be seen.
