The theatre buzzed with excitement. Men, women, and children ran back and forth, chattering up a storm as they began to prepare. For what, exactly? For a party, one that would allow them temporary access into the innermost portion of Ba Sing Se, a place where people from their background rarely ever claimed to see. Even more so, they were to be allowed into the royal palace. The moment their leader had received the invitation (though it was more of a request to perform than a normal invitation), he had busted down the squeaky door leading to his office and exclaimed to the troupe, we're playin' for the king! The rest of the week had been spent preparing.
A small hiss of pain escaped his lips, fingers curling into the wood of his stool. An old comb pulled back his long hair, wrinkled fingers holding onto the dark strands, styling with relatively ease. The one on the stool screwed his eyes shut, tensing his muscles as he tried not to vocalize his pain with each tug of the comb. It was over in an hour with his hair knotted into a chignon and pinned with a flowery dwikkoji. He did not move, however, even with his hair completed. No, he still had to wait. He closed his eyes once more as he felt the bristles of a brush against his skin. He waited and waited, ignoring the urge to get up and leave as the elderly woman painted his face with various types of makeup. Even after she was done, he waited. He had to. If he accidentally smudged the makeup, there would be no redoes.
The brunet slowly stood, taking in a deep breath before he hesitantly opened his eyes. He turned toward the woman, watching for an approving look, before a small smile graced his face. Pale hands smoothed out the material of his dress, and he momentarily paused to admire the costume. It was only a simple yet elegant hanbok with green and yellow. It was also very uncomfortable for the wearer (at least, if the wearer was him), but he could at least appreciate the beauty in the piece. Besides, he was already stuck in it. If he wanted to change, they would have to redo his hair and makeup, and no one would be happy with that. So, the teenager remained silent, bowing his head in respect as the elderly woman left.
He let out a small sigh, glancing over to the corner of the small room where a black mass sat, green eyes gleaming in the pale lighting of the covered candle. His small smile turned sympathetic as the feline stood, stretched, and sauntered over to him. "I'm sorry, Jajeong, but you can't come." He carefully bent down, scratching the puma behind one of his ears before he straightened back up. "I'll be back later tonight. Try not to tear up the costumes while we're gone, okay?" With a small wave to the obviously displeased pygmy puma, he turned to head out the door.
The troupe--or, the small handful who were going--made the trip into the inner ring of Ba Sing Se, passing through various security checkpoints along the way. The sun was inching toward the horizon by the time they had arrived, and then there was one last set of guards they had to get past before they could enter the party. The troupe's leader handed the invitation to the guards, grinning from ear to ear at the slight nod of approval he was given from the guard. They were led into the main hall where the party was to be held, and the group quickly dispersed to explore what they could, acting like complete tourists while their 'star' remained off to the side.
Yun-Uk couldn't help but let another small smile slip on his lips, tilting the corners up as he watched the antics of his fellow performers. He, on the other hand, would not be joining them in exploration. No, he was only here because he was to perform. He still didn't even know what he was going to perform, probably just wing it like he did every now and again. They had forced him to prepare a number of songs, after all, so he should be all set to singing along to whatever began to play.
