The fragrant tea flowed from the spout like a small waterfall. Droplets of the steaming liquid hit the bottom of the porcelain cup and splashed upwards until the overwhelming tide of tea rose up filling the cup entirely. Joo Dee turned the pot upwards and pulled it back towards her chest. The woman smiled, waiting expectantly. She looked pristine in her silk kimono and Lee silently wondered if she had done something different with her hair today. He looked down at the cup, watching the white foam circling on the surface of the ochre liquid.
It was a beautiful day in the royal gardens and The King sat at a stone table under the shade of a large gazebo. The sun caressed the blossoms on the nearby white dragon bushes and the sounds of trickling water could be heard from one of the many natural springs nearby. This courtyard lay near the center of the Palace in Ba Sing Se, the halls of which were guarded by hundreds of Dai Li agents. This thought should have made The King feel secure. Instead he rocked back and forth anxiously in his seat and ran has fingers through his tightly pulled back raven hair, messing it up a little.
He tried to speak calmly but there was a hint of urgency in his tone that couldn't be masked, “You came back rather quickly, Joo Dee. Did you brew this yourself?” The woman’s smile faded a little, “No Your Majesty, one of your Dai Li agents made the tea.” Lee nodded and continued staring down at the cup. Lee’s mind raced as he thought of all the terrible things the Dai Li might have done to this tea. Kailì approached from somewhere behind Lee. Leaning over the King he ran a finger over the surface of the tea, just skimming the surface. The Dai Li guard brought his finger to his mouth and tasted the liquid before spitting off to his right. “This isn’t jasmine tea!” Kailì exclaimed as his grey mustache wiggled angrily.
Joo Dee stood waiting expectantly. The Earth King snapped at her, “Well? You heard him! This isn’t jasmine tea. Go make it again!” Joo Dee looked taken aback, “But your majesty you havn’t even tasted it!” Lee spoke coldly, “Are you calling my guard a liar?” Joo Dee glanced at the empty space that The King was referring too before bowing her head, “N-no.” she stammered.
Two Dai Li guards appeared behind her. One asked in a gruff voice, “Your Majesty, Is there a problem?” Lee could see the fear in the woman’s eyes. “No” he responded. “No, she was just going to go get me some fresh tea.” The agent nodded and the three left him alone in the garden. He turned to Kailì, “I suppose it’s just us then”. He smiled manically up at his only true friend.
