Fire Nation
Location- Western Hemisphere
Summary- The Fire Nation is enjoying a time of prosperity and cutlure, and has entered an age of steel. In the past forty years the Fire Nation has shifted from a peaceful society to one that views the other nations as barbaric. Under Fire Lord Sozin they have already began an illegal occupation of the western coast of the Earth Kingdom.
Culture- Over the past forty years the focus of the Fire Nation has shifted from art and music to one of strict discipline and loyalty to the Fire Lord. Speech customs have also changed, in the past it was considered polite to greet people as "Hotmen". Today this speech is not common in the urban centers of the Fire Nation but is still often practiced by rural civilians.
Gender- Woman in the Fire Nation enjoy for the most part the same rights as men, and their has been at least one Fire Lady in the nation's past. Woman are typically not allowed to join the military, but exceptions have been made for extremely skilled females. Elite units do not bar females from joining, although they are dominated by males because they recruit mostly through the military.
What is different from the series- Tanks, airships, and larger ships do not yet exist. The primary mode of military ground travel is Rhinos. The great gate of Azulon has not yet been erected, and some of the Fire Sages have not yet been corrupted by Fire Lord Sozin.
Canon that we are (sort of) breaking- The wiki states that the Fire Nation's military has always been a volunteer force. Although this is still the case, it is considered extremely dishonorable to not have at least one son in the military. Many people are abused behind the scenes if they refuse to send a son to war.
Water Tribe
Location- North and South pole, Foggy Swamp
Summary- Divided on issues of gender equality and non bender rights, the Northern and Southern Water tribe still make peaceful contact with one another. The Northern Water tribe is ruled by a chief, and its society favors male water benders. In the Southern Water Tribe their are far fewer water benders, and non benders are treated as equal members of the society. The Foggy Swamp Tirbe, an offshoot of Southern Water tribe separatists who settled in the Earth Kingdom, are a spiritual people who live in harmony with nature. Due to their spirituality, most Foggy Swamp Tribe members have developed the ability to bend.
Gender- In the Northern Water Tribe, women are treated as property of their father until they are married (at which point they belong to the husband). It is not uncommon for a daughter to be traded off for political status and love based marriages are unheard of. In the Southern Water tribe females are treated as equals, and can even join the men as warriors. In the Foggy Swamp women are treated as spiritual leaders, usually in charge of the politics of the tribe.
What is Different- The large gate in the Northern Water Tribe has not yet been erected and it is an open port. The Southern Water Tribe still has water benders.
Canon that we are breaking- None, but some of what was added above are not derived from canon sources.
Earth Kingdom
Location- Eastern Hemisphere
Summary- The Earth Kingdom is the largest nation in the world. After the reign of Chin the Conqueror, the Kingdom has become vastly decentralized and complex. Currently in a state of decline, the Earth Kingdom is loosely organized into city states. One notable variant of the Earth Nation are the people of the Si Wong desert, who have learned how to use many of the techniques found in water bending to manipulate sand with their earth bending.
Gender- Varies widely by city/state, but for the most part gender rules are lax. The Earth Kingdom does not have any females in its formal military, but many city militias do.
What is Different- For the most part the Earth Kingdom is the most unchanged territory, although the Fire Nation hasn't left a violent mark on it yet. The Fire Nation presence at the moment is illegal, but no resistance was mounted upon the occupying forces and many Earth Kingdom citizens still live with the colonies of the Fire Nation. The Dai Li exist in the time period as well, but the Earth King's status as either a symbol or leader will be left up to interpretation.
Canon that we are breaking- None, the Earth Kingdom has the most detailed history by far and it was easy to incorporate them into the game as is.
Air Nomads
Location- 4 Temples (2 for males in the North and South, 2 for females in the East and West)
Summary- The Air Nomads are a peaceful people who live in the hard to reach places of the world. They live pious lifestyles and avoid materialism. Considered the most spiritual people in the world, all air nomads are born with the ability to bend. Air Nomads are encouraged to interact with the other peoples of the world and are often sent on pilgrimages to other temples.
Gender- Although they live in separate locations, the Air Nomads have no concept of gender inequality. The sexes are separated to avoid attachment, and typically procreation only happens during the late winter (it is considered good luck to have a child in the fall).
What is Different- Well, the Air Nomads are alive...
