Name: Benjiro Riku
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Nation: Earth Nation
Physical Appearance: Benjiro clothes are basic Earth Kingdom design, they hide a body built by years of Sand and Crystal Bending and training, a compact, muscular form that stands at 5'10" and was carved from stone, so to speak. While his body may hold a couple of scars, they aren't all to large or particularly noticeable. His head is covered in a thick, wavy flowing mane of brown hair, which flows down to his shoulders, mostly hiding his medium sized ears. His eyes tend to have a soft, kind of dazed appearance to them, with a brown hue that is almost a little muddy.
For his clothes. Benjiro once again doesn't stand out too much, a simple green shirt with long sleeves and a high color adorns his torso and covers his arms up to his wrists. On top of that, Benjiro wears what might just be his favorite type of clothing, a tan vest with a simple but elegant cloud design on the bottom and a turtle design on his chest, but don't ask him what kind of animal it is. On his bottom half, he wears only a simple pair of dark green pants that might be a bit too baggy for him, but Benjiro cares little.
As for the little things that is a part of Benjiro's appearance, he has several items that some people might seem a little off or different. Wrapped around his ankles, keeping the bottom of his pants away from his feet, are some bandages that are wrapped but not too tightly. This also shows off that Benjiro doesn't wear shoes either or any kind. He also has a pair of glasses that are square rimmed without the top rim. Benjiro also carries with him a muddy green messenger bag that has a few different items within, including a few pieces of jennamite and a traditional Sand Bender head wrap with a pair of sand goggles.
Equipment: One of Benjiro's main piece of equipment is a large shield he wears on his back, used only to really protect him from being attacked from behind. The Shield is tan and green in color, relating to the colors of the Earth Kingdom, though its shape looks familiar to the shell of a turtle. Benjiro also has 5 different crystals of Jennamite, each a different color, that he carries with him within his bag. Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and White/Opaque are the five different colors the has, and while he normally only uses one or two colors at a time when in combat, he tends to entertain himself with multiple when at rest. The last piece of gear that Benjiro has, and tries to hide from most, is a gourd of cactus water, Benjiro being addicting to the hallucinogenic liquid.
Combat Skills: During his very early youth, Benjiro was taught the basics of earth bending from a teacher in his home town. After the incident though and wondering for almost a full month in the Si Wong Desert, Benjiro was picked up by sand benders and soon adapted to their ways. As such, Benjiro considers himself a well trained sand bender, his movements both strong and flowing, like earth and air. Not only that, his love of jennamite has allowed him to increase his range to bending the crystal in both a solid and sand form. As a Crystal Sand Bender, he has to have good control over the loose, flowing sand and the sharp, cutting crystals and the ability to switch the crystals between both states. To complement the style of bending, Benjiro has also learned a style of hand-to-hand combat that avoids like an air bender but strikes like an earth bender.
Talents: Benjiro can't really calm to have too many talents or skills, and while it is a bit of a modest statement on his behalf, there is something he tends to excel at. Using his sand bending in conjunction with jennamite, he can create statues of objects and living things, even using the different colors of jennamite to allow for more realism. Another talent he has is the ability to use his crystal sand to mimic the movement of other types of bending, even if just in appearance of the element itself. Red crystal sand can appear similar to fire, while blue to water or ice, and even his white crystal to mimic the dust kicked up by an air bender. He uses these skills to help keep money in his pocket.
Flaws: Benjiro is a poor bender, who has two devils in the form of a flaw in his life, starting with his addiction. Cactus Juice, as its sometimes referred to, has affected Benjiro's mind in a couple of ways, with the 'best' way being a manner to calm and relax his mind in times of turmoil. Its thanks to this 'juice' that Benjiro can at times ignore the past and even detach from the present. But hallucinations are still a very common thing, even in low doses of Cactus juice, so its not uncommon for Benjiro to react to things that aren't there or things of that sort, from talking to a wall to possibly attacking a random person or object because 'it was coming right for him'.
It was an incident in the past though, that is the cause of Benjiro's second flaw, the inability to bend normal earth, aka rocks of any sort. Crystals and Sand are fine though, but be it a pebble or a boulder, Benjiro has a mental block that keeps the Crystal Sand Bender from being able to bend earth. If need be, he'll turn the ground into sand around him instead of just using the earth, which takes an extra step in combat. A trauma of seeing his parents being "crushed" by a large boulder, and a rock being shot and breaking his arm, has made Benjiro quite frightened of bending earth. Its not as if earth itself scares the bender, but the act of bending it. Which is usually when Cactus juice comes in to calm his nerves.
He also isn't very good at swimming but you try to be in the middle of the desert.
History: Benjiro was born into a decently well off family, not rich, but not poor either. His father worked as a teacher at a local Earth Bending School, and his Mother was a Fortune Teller at Makapu Village. When he was old enough, just past the age of 5, his father enlisted the young Benjiro into the school he worked in, though the boy took classes with a different instructor, one for younger children. For about a year and a half he learned the basics of Earth Bending, from the stances to different strikes, and even started to actually bend the earth itself. Basic level stuff, nothing too advanced for young children to help prevent being hurt.
At the age of 7, Benjiro left for the country side with his parents, the three of them taking a trip to a small family owned house they had out near Si Wong Desert. They had spent a few days out in the country with such a relaxing vacation in which to relax, though things were to change. While out on a picnic at the desert side, Benjiro and his parents were attacked by Earth Bending bandits, one of which dropping a large boulder down upon his parents. There was a loud crunch and a thud. Eyes wide and open with fear, Benjiro turned and ran from the incident, tears in his eyes and crying out loud. Seeing the boy run, one of the benders shot a rock at Benjiro, hitting the boy in his forearm and snapping the bone.
Benjiro continued to run, crying in pain and sadness, wanting to get away from the bandits. His path would take him into the Si Wong Desert though, a place that would change his life forever. Back at the picnic though, his father had used his bending to change the direction of the falling rock, and it instead fell on the watermelon beside them, A fight ensued between the Bandits and his Father, but when the battle was over, Benjiro was nowhere in sight. With nothing more then a piece of jennamite in his pocket, Benjiro was lost in the desert, crying out for his parents with nothing but sand around him. The first thing he had encountered was a cactus, and being without water, he did the only thing he could think of and break it open, drinking the water within.
His thirsty and greedy throat was filled with the Cactus Juice, and soon the pain and worry he had been feeling drifted away, and the young Benjiro felt as if he was on a cloud. The jennamite in his pocket wound up in his hand, and soon began to grow, covering his broken arm in its crystals. Now and then the youth would take a bit from the jennamite covering his arm, the world around him filled with colors and things he had never seen before. He wondered, aimlessly, pulling along behind him a few cacti and his jennamite encrusted arm, the crystal trying to cover him more now and again, only for him to bend if off.
The hallucinations led him all over the desert for 3 full weeks, the boy stumbling upon the occasional cactus patch and refilling his belly and his mind with the contents. He knew not where he was, where he was going, or where he had been, and by the time Sand Benders found him, his body had collapsed on the sand. Nothing more then skin and bone, cactus needles sticking from his hand, face, and side, with the jennamite threatening to encase him whole. His recovery, medical treatments, and rehabilitation for his arm took almost a full year, during which the boy learned the basics of sand bending, using one arm.
There would be times though, when he had tried to earth bend and his mind flashed back to the incident, and panic attacks would ensue. Panic and fear flooded his mind and made him lash out, once even hurting a helpful sand bender. It was then that they decided that to ease the boy, a sedative would have to be given, but with none readily available, they made due with the same cactus juice he had been drinking, but only in small amounts. By the age of 10, Benjiro had almost fully locked away his memories of the past and focused only on his current life, learning sand bending and even helping the sand benders salvage items for trading.
It was during one of these trading excursions, Benjiro found some more jennamite from a discarded bag and upon holding it in his hand, he remembered his love of the crystal. It was the only item he brought back home with him, and soon he began to grow the crystal and tried to bend it, moving it a little. With that, the next year alongside his sand bending training, Benjiro trained on bending jennamite and sound found that it was easily turned into sand and back into crystal. With that, Benjiro's bending took on a whole new style, allowing the jennamite to grow on his forearms as he was sand bending, turning the growing crystal into a shimmering crystal sand.
The next 7 years, Benjiro lived among the sand benders doing everything he could to live their lifestyle as best he could, but soon he made a mistake that caused him to be banished from the tribe. In a dangerous move, Benjiro took out a sand-sailor on his own and headed into the desert, desperate for cactus juice. His reckless behavior for a fix wound Benjiro up at a buzzard wasp nest, and the creatures began to swarm him. He lashed out at them, only getting them angrier at him, and Benjiro rushed back home, causing the swarm to follow him and attack the tribe. Many of the sand benders where hurt in the surprise attack from the swarm.
Benjiro was an outcast from the only family he had known, due to his addiction, and he was left to wonder the Earth Kingdom, making money the only way he knew. 3 years later, and Benjiro is still a wanderer, though decently well known for his candy sculptures, and decently well off for money, at least until his need for Cactus juice arises again.
Personality: Benjiro is a unique man in many ways, or at least that's what some people who have traveled with him long enough might say. Sometimes he may act a little withdrawn, but that doesn't mean he is a shy one, and will more often then not open up and talk with people if someone else starts the conversation. He tends to not be too argumentative, and is generally a pretty agreeable person and enjoys just spending time chatting with others. The Crystal Sand Bender enjoys getting compliments about his work too, showing off his crystal sand bending out where people can see him do it.
Not really one for conflict, Benjiro acts friendly and calm when dealing with most people, and will try to first come to a compromise if someone acts out toward him. That does not mean that he is a pacifist though, and if push comes to shove, Benjiro is more then glad to stand up for himself in a combat situation. While he might not always be happy about resorting to violence, the thrill of battle is still a thing in his mind, the feeling of adventure and adrenaline rushing through him makes the battle itself an amazing thing.
He does shy away from other Earth Benders and Earth Bending, a small feeling of distrust sitting in the Crystal Sand Bender's heart. He tries to not let it affect him and his daily life, but you'll more likely see him sitting closer to a Fire Bender then an Earth Bender. Benjiro is a man in possession of a righteous heart, standing up for the weak, protecting the innocent, and standing up for the little guy, but sometimes things are stronger then one's heart.
Benjiro has a negative side, just like everyone else. Aside from his distrust of Earth Benders and enjoyment of battle, Benjiro has a few more bad points to him. His addiction can turn the nice quiet Sand Bender into a desperate low life, doing what he can to get to his supply of Cactus Juice. Violence, thievery, lying are three things that Benjiro tends to latch onto when his needs get too much, and this can be a turn off to friends or allies, who might at times become a victim of Benjiro's need.
Not to mention, once under the influence of Cactus Juice, Benjiro tends to enter a dreamy state, with slower words, sometimes a sluggish reaction time, and general randomness. A little bit of cactus juice only tends to relax Benjiro, making the Sand Bender a bit more open and friendly, but larger amounts tend to cause more changes. The actions that Benjiro take in his search for Cactus Juice causes the Sand Bender to withdraw into himself, once his buzz dies down, feeling horrible for his actions.
Pet: N/A. Maybe a Turtle Ferret or something later on, but N/A for now.
Writing Sample: Benjiro Riku, Crystal Sculpture Extraordinaire, or at least that's what the sign next to read, was focused on a new piece. With both sleeves rolled up, a small table in front of him and two small crystals resting on his right arm, Benjiro was quiet and focused. Red and green crystals sparkled on his arm and grew a little, Benjiro waved his fingers over the green crystal and turned the extra growths into sand, lifting them into the air and moved them into position on the table. Slowly the crystal sand formed together and turned back into crystal, and Benjiro continued to add more to the shape, moving the sand upward in a thin shape.
From there, Benjiro took red jennamite and made a small crystal circle on the top of the green crystal stem, letting the green jennamite regrow once more. From there, he took more of the green jennamite and created two crystalline projections, one on each side, before taking the green piece of jennamite from his hand. Using red alone, Benjiro began to make delicate folds from the red crystal circle and slowly added more and more until finally, he leaned back and let out a sigh, removing the red jennamite from his hand. Taking a moment to relax, Benjiro leaned forward and picked the crystal rose from the table, breaking it at the base, and wrapped the base in a thin piece of paper and handed it over.
The little girl smiled and took the candy rose and let out an oooo before taking a bite out of the jennamite leaf on the side. Smiling, Benjiro took a couple of coins from the girl's mother and put them into his pocket, before putting the Jennamite back into his bag. As he was setting up to go, a rock smashed into the ground next to his bag, almost hitting his hand. Looking at the rock and then up at the source, Benjiro stared at the Earth Nation Soldier as the man stared back down at him. "Sellin candy eh? Do ya have a permit?" The Earth Nation Soldier said, bending a small rock into the air.
Taking a deep breath, panting a little bit, Benjiro shook his head, pulling out a gourd and taking a sip. As the Cactus Juice's effects flowed over his body, Benjiro took another deep breath and got to his feet, feeling a little light and loose. Looking at the Soldier, Benjiro reached out and touched the man's face, because for him it appeared to be stretching and squishing a little bit. "Sorry sorry sir I'll be movin and groovin." Benjiro said with a smile and began to walk off, his bag around his shoulders. The rock the Soldier had zoomed near Benjiro's ear, and the Crystal Sand Bender turned around on his right heel, facing the Solder with a confused look.
"Ya have ta pay a fine, hand over whatcha made." The Soldier said, obviously extorting the man, only for Benjiro to kick the ground, turning the area between Benjiro and the Soldier into sand. "Naaah I'mma good." Benjiro said with a smile, before using his hand to lift up a small fountain of sand in front of him. Before the Soldier could do anything in retailation, Benjiro shot the fountain of sand at the Soldier's left foot and made the man loose his balance. "Watch out for the laughin sand sir." Benjiro said, watching the sand move, as if it was laughing. He then used both hands and began to move the sand away from him, carrying the Soldier along with it until dumping both the sand and the Soldier into a small pond.
Turning again on his heel, Benjiro began to walk away, making his way into a small crowd and losing the wet Soldier and avoiding any more conflict for the day. Besides, Benjiro was feeling way to relaxed to do any more fighting.
