Name: Rei Haruko
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Nation: Fire Nation
Physical Appearance: Rei has long, slightly wavy black hair with shorter bangs. She has nice golden eyes, like many others who hail from the Fire Nation. She's tall, with long limbs and a smaller upper body. She has a stocky build, making her look strong but not overly large. She's naturally pretty, but doesn't give much thought to her appearance.
Rei prefers simple garments to the fancy robes of her social class. She wears a simple, fitted crimson tunic over dark colored trousers. The tunic has shorter sleeves. She wears dark colored wrappings around her wrists. She always wears this pair of old black boots that she's had forever, and is strangely fond of. Her hair is always pulled back away from her face in a simple braid or ponytail. During colder weather, Rei adds a pull over knee length coat with a hood.
During fancier events, her parents don't allow her lazier habits to show, and demands she dresses up. Even in these situations, she keeps things as simple as possible. She hates makeup, and refuses to wear it. She doesn't mind dresses, as long as they aren't too complicated to get on, or uncomfortable.
Equipment: When not with her father, Rei chooses to use two custom daggers instead of bending. The dagger's hilts are made of dark leather with a crimson pattern carved into them. Her name is carved into the hilt of one blade. The other has the quote "fall seven times, stand up eight," carved into it. The blades are identical, made of a darker tinted metal.
Combat Skills: Her father being who he is, Rei was taught extensively in many forms of combat, the focus being on bending. Her father began teaching her as soon as she could walk. She had a natural talent for bending as he did, and caught on quickly. Though not quite a master, her knowledge of bending is extensive, and she is quite skilled in using it for combat purposes. She has a very traditional style, with her cultured life reflected in her bending.
Her father also taught her sword fighting, but because he didn't focus on this as much, she's not nearly as good at it. She could get by in a fight against an untrained or barely knowledgeable opponent, but a skilled swordsman would easily beat her. She took what she did learn and converted it to a smaller blade, finding it was easier for her to work with them. She uses daggers more often than a sword now, and has more skill in them than sword fighting, but her highest skill is still bending.
Talents: Rei has always had a wild imagination, and enjoys story telling quite a lot. She's very good at it, and likes to use her bending to illustrate the stories she tells. She's always found a beauty in fire that most benders ignore. She's learned to harness this beauty to make the scenes she creates in the fire realistic and lively, easily capturing the story within the flames. Because of her parents disproving of the talent, she usually tells stories in secret, so most don't know of her talent.
Flaws: Rei actually fears the power she wields. She hates the fact that she can so easily destroy, and that she's good at it. It causes her to hesitate at times in real combat, especially with an opponent who appears weaker, smaller, or younger than Rei. She would never attack someone outright. She'd much rather fight without her bending, where she has a smaller chance of hurting someone, but an equally smaller chance of winning. If it weren't for her father's wishes, she would only use her bending for storytelling.
Rei also has an extremely rebellious side. Usually this isn't much of a flaw, but she just can't control it. She has a hard time keeping herself in line. This causes a lot of tension between her and her parents, which only makes her rebel more. There's probably not one rule that her parents have set that she hasn't broken at least once. Part of her thinks it's because she wasn't given enough freedom to mess around as a child, so she's making up for the loss now that she's older.
History: Rei's family lives in Capital City. Her father, Osamu, is a general in the army, and has a temper to fit the position. Her mother, Chou, is a gentle woman, and rarely speaks out against her husband. Their family has a long history of great military leaders.
Rei didn't have much of a childhood. As soon as she was old enough to understand, her father began teaching her to firebend. With training came a disciplined life, one unsuited for childish games. Her father favored Ryuu, her older brother, over Rei, and often times made it evident throughout their training. Though Rei did have more natural talent than her brother, her fear of her bending slowed her learning. She struggled to keep her father happy. He would punish her a lot, and would only get more angry if she cried or tried to get away.
As Rei go older, she was sent away to a private school for girls, where she learned quite a lot. Away from her father's harsh nature, Rei opened up and became a very lighthearted young girl. She made many close friends, and loved her time at school. During this time, she learned the more beautiful side of firebending and began to use it to create stories. She became fascinated by the idea, and would often entertain large groups with her tales. When she returned home at the end of the year, she tried to show her family all that she had learned, but her father became very angry. He forced her to promise him she would never bend like this again. He also decided that the school wasn't a good influence for his daughter, so he stopped sending her there. Between losing contact with her friends and being unable to use her bending to tell stories, Rei was heartbroken.
For a while, Rei tried to keep her promise, but as her father's training became harsher, she only longed for the beauty of the stories more. She began practicing again in secret. When her mother discovered what she was doing, Chou had sympathy on the girl, and allowed her to practice her stories, but told her to leave the house when she did so, so her father wouldn't find out. She began sneaking out, wearing a hooded cloak that kept her face hidden. She would tell stories to passerby's, and sometimes they would pay her. They started calling her the Little Sutoritera, or Little Storyteller. Somebody shortened it to Sutori. The name became very popular amongst her audience. Sutori became her street name, and the name of the person she became outside of her father's home.
When Rei was sixteen, her brother left to join the army. Without him around, Rei's father became a little nicer to Rei, because he stopped comparing her to her brother. The only problem with this is he became more involved in her life, and wouldn't allow her as much time on her own. It cut back on the time she got to spend telling stories. She started doing it at night instead. Her stories became so popular, people didn't mind coming at odd hours of the night to see them. Some said they were better at night.
As whispers of war spread through the Fire Nation, Rei's rebellious side kicks in. She doesn't want to fight the other nations, and has decided that if it comes to it, she will leave the Fire Nation and help the other nations.
Personality: Rei's very slow to trust, and doesn't have very many close friends. She envies her brother, because he was always their parent's favorite. She secretly doesn't agree with the emperor's ideas of taking over the whole world, for no reason in particular. Rei has her father's strategic abilities, but has never used them in a militaristic sense; instead she uses them to get around her parent's rules and to give herself a little more freedom.
You might say Rei has two personalities; the one she uses around her parents to keep them pleased, and the real her, the one people see when she's telling stories, and know as Sutori.
Around her parents, Rei is very quiet and polite. She only speaks if someone starts a conversation with her. She's very good at pleasing people, because she's really good with words; she uses them to twist the situation to make it seem better to the person she's trying to please than it actually is. Only when she's angry does this change; when angry she can be very rude, but she still never raises her voice around her parents, because she knows better than to shout at her father.
When away from her parents, Rei is very sarcastic, loud, and carefree. She has a wild imagination, gets into trouble a lot, and loves to explore. She knows her way around the wilder side of the city, and is very good at getting what she wants, because she's very manipulative. At times she can be surprisingly blunt, but this is usually with her friends. When angry, she can become very dangerous; when she's angry is the only time she doesn't hold herself back when bending.
