Name: Aang
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Nation: Air Nomads
Physical Appearance: Soft featured, Aang is about average for his height. Like other most other Air Benders, he has grey eyes and his head is shaved in accordance with the Monk lifestyle that he lives. However, he varies from other air benders his age in the fact that he has his tattoos, blue lines that come to arrows at the hands, feet and head, which are based off the markings on the Sy Bison. Aang is fairly slight, something which is helpful with his airbending. If he were to not shave his head, it would turn out that Aang has dark brown hair but this fact is not currently known.
Like other Air benders, Aang wears yellow and orange robes. The yellow section seems to act as trousers and a long sleeved shirt. There is an orange band of cloth around his center and a sleevless jacket made of orange cloth (and somewhat similar to a waistcoat) that he wears. The outfit is completed with a set of brown boots that he tucks his trousers into.
Equipment: Aang, like other Air Benders, possesses a glider. This appears to be a stick when not in use that is just over the height of Aang. The frame is made from wood, with two sections used for flight. There two sections (one at the top where the user holds on with their hands and one at the end which is smaller and supports the feet) which act like fans with their ability to go out from a singular point (the center of the staff). The wood is brown and the fabric of the glider is orange. The glider is used by moving air currents that allows an air bender to have controlled flight for extended periods of time. It is standard equipment for all air benders.
Combat Skills: Aang is an exceptionally gifted individual. He became a master at Air Bending at a young age, much younger than most others. He gained this because he invented the technique of the air scooter. Air bending is a graceful martial art that follows the pattern of circles, much like the air. It is also large non confrontational. Aang follows these teachings. There has been no real need to Aang to practice his skills in combat in real life situations and so one could be uncertain as to how he would perform if he had to fight with another but it is safe to assume that due to his training, Aang would be well equipped to hold his own against an opponenet and even win.
It is also worth mentioning that Aang is the Avatar, the reincarnation of past Avatars. He is capable of bending all elements although he has yet to learn this. It is safe to assume that he will struggle with Earth bending the most as it is a very rigid style that contrasts with the flowing of the Air Bending. Another perk along with being the Avatar is the fact that they can enter the Avatar state when they channel thir past selves. This causes the spirit to glow (seen through they eyes and mouth and, in the case of air benders, the tattoos). This state is much more dangerous, especially as emotions generally seem to disappear completely. So far, Aang has not used any of his Avatar abilities, sticking only to his natural ability of air bending.
Talents: Aang is a talented individual, having invented his own airbending movement from a young age. This air bending move has proved to be successful as other students quickly learned it and used it in a game. Aang is very accomplished at air bending, having already received his tattoos for creating the aforementioned movement. He is quiet an accomplished dancer, having learnt dances from various different places, including the Fire Nation. Dancing is not surprisingly supported by his airbending, which helps with flexibility and balance.
Flaws:Cheerful go lucky, Aang is often one to not be aware of his danger or to even consider it. He often his rash with his actions, jumping into things head first without thinking about the reprocussions of what he is doing. This can be obviously problematic as it can get him and his friends into trouble. He also prefers to remain ignorant of things that he doesn't agree with and to simply cast them from his mind, a primary example being his desire to not acknowledge that he is the Avatar. It can also be considered a flaw that Aang would struggle with having to kill those who stand to disturb the balance, a job that the Avatar must be prepared to do but one that goes against the ethics that he has been taught.
History: Born to two unknown air bending parents, Aang lead a normal life, being raised by Monks (In the Southern Air Temple) from an early age. It was between his third and fifth year of life, that he was presented with a range of toys from which to choose from. Little did Aang know that this was a test to see if he was the reincarnation of Avatar Roku who was in turn the reincarnation of Avatar Kyoshi and so on. The toys that Aang had chosen, believing them to be the most fun, where the toys of past Avatars and so it was known to the Monks that it was this child who would be the next Avatar.
But in accordance with tradition, Aang was not informed of his past lives and instead was left to live his life in freedom. So Aang had no reason to understand why he was so good at air bending, excelling faster than one would think normal for any child. During this time, Aang was raised by Monk Gyatso (a friend of the previous Avatar) who was a great friend to Aang.
When he was six years of age that Aang and some other boys went to the Eastern Air Temple. There it was that Aang met Appa, who he offered an apple. This lead to a life long friendship between Sky Bison and boy. Travelling is not unusual for the Air Nomads and it was during his travels that Aang got to stay in Omashu and meet Bumi, an eccentric Earth Bender who left a lasting impression on Aang. He also got to journey to the Fire nation where he made good friends with a rural lad called Kuzon. Together the two managed to save a dragon egg from poachers, something that has stayed with him.
It wasn't long after this that Aang received his tattoos for creating the air sphere, a move that involves creating a ball of air and riding on it. This, unfortunately was getting near to marking the end of his carefree days. With the political unrest, something happened that had not happened before. Aang was told about his Avatar status four years earlier than should be. He was only twelve.
Work got harder and it was only Monk Gyatso who allowed him to play. The other boys found out about who he was and he could no longer play games with them because it was a supposed unfair advantage. It was difficult for Aang and his closest companion soon became solely Monk Gyatso. But it was soon deemed that even this could not be permitted for the young Avatar as it was decided that he needed to have no distractions. The Monks soon told Gyatso, all of them unaware that Aang was listening. He also heard that they planned to send him away to another temple. To seperate them.
So it was that Aang took matters into his own hands, packing only his glider, he saddled up Appa and left before anyone could get to him. Narrowly avoiding a storm, he headed off away from the South Pole and North towards the Earth Kingdom.
Personality: Aang often appears to be eternally cheerful, rarely letting himself ever seem to be down in front of others. He is keen to play around with others and disregard any official and serious business that may present itself, even if it is something like the fact that he is the Avatar and there is political unrest at the present moment in time. It is quiet easy for Aang to forget about the troubles that face him when he can distract himself with something like swimming, or ridding on animals or playing games with Monk Gyatso.
However, he does struggle with what he is, the Avatar. It is not something that Aang wants to be or to take serious. Everyone else does, though. At times, Aang can feel segregated against because of who he happens to be and he doesn't like this. It also makes him feel weighed down with expectations, things that he cannot achieve. It's a heavy burden that he does not want to carry.
Pet: Appa
Appearance: App is a flying bison. He is several meters tall and covered in thick white fur with grey patterning that takes the form of stripes going out from his spine. His eyes are dark grey and the eyelids are free from the thick fur and are white. He has an impressive set of herbivore teeth in his mouth. Due to his size and the loudness of his bellow, not many creatures (including predators) are willing to face Appa in a fight.
Talents: Like other Sky Bison, Appa is able to fly, using his tail to produce updrafts. To get Appa to fly, there is the verbal command of 'yip yip'. Appa is well equipped to defend himself and Aang, due to his large size that means that very few creatures would consider attacking him.
Flaws: Appa is a very large creature. This makes him very hard to hide, especially while on the run. It also means that he needs to eat a lot of food. As well as this, Appa is afraid of enclosed spaces such as caves. There is also the fact that Appa is dependant on Aang to provide him with food and companionship.
Personality: Appa is incredibly loyal to Aang, whom he cares for. This has got Appa into trouble on occasion but the gentle giant never seems to mind, willing to just do his best to stay with Aang and protect him. Of course, this doesn't meant that he is a push over. Appa can be very protective of Aang and very fierce when it comes to protecting himself and his friends.
Writing Sample: This was a trip. That was what Aang kept telling himself. And it felt like a trip. Just with less people. Just him and Appa. It wasn't easy. The boy missed Gyasto, his rooms, the other children. But They were going to send him away anyway. Better to go of his own free will than be parted. Besides, now he could do what he liked and avoid having to carry the burden of who they said he was. Seriously, could they really believe he was the Avatar just because of the items he had picked as a child? They were fun! Which kid wouldn't pick the fun and games?
So what was on his schedule of things to do? Well, he had to go visit Bumi and Kuzon! It would be great to catch up with his two friends. Maybe they could go on an adventure! And they didn't have to know about everything else. Aang could help them out with anything that they were struggling with. Maybe the three of them could all take a break. After all, there were plenty of places where they could all have fun and play around. And what about the Water Tribes? Aang hadn't really had a chance to visit anyone there and he wanted to have the chance to see people from all the Nations! And the Penguin-Seals! He had to rid one of those!
But it was getting late. Escaping that storm had been a narrow miss. It had come close and both he and Appa were worn out.
"Come on, boy," He said, patting the sky bison's head affectionately. "We should find some place to rest for the night," Slowly, their altitude decreased and the ground grew closer. They were over the Earth Kingdom and near Omashu. He would pop in and see Bumi first, Aang decided. It would be good to let his metaphorical air down for a bit.
Down through the clouds they went and Aang shivered slightly at the cold before the air started to warm up as they came close to the edge of a forest. The boy was hoping that he could find some small and quiet village to stay at overnight although he hadn't thought to pack any money in his hurry to leave. But he was certain that there would be someone who would put him up for the night before he left to go to see Bumi.
Finally after what must have been about half an hour of low flying, they came upon a small farm and Aang guided Appa down to the ground. For such a large creature, he made precious little sound as all six of his feet touched the earth. Quickly sliding off the great creature's head, Aang moved towards the Farm House and knocked on the door, a large friendly smile on his face, ready to greet the hopefully kindly owners of the establishment.
